Davina and Company

Sophia sank into a respectful curtsy as the King arrived. Her bright 'fur stole' had a different idea and raised its head to examine the newcomers. Except for the occasional flick of her long fluffy tail, Aurora had been quiet during the race. Her mistress had hoped that she wouldn't cause trouble, but now she was staring at the King and Nicolette with an inquisitive look on her wizened little face. Sophia shoved the monkey's head downwards so His Majesty wouldn't be offended by the audacity of her pet. The golden lion tamarin let out one indignant little trill.

All of the attention was on Mistress Wellsley, Churchill, and Osborne, so perhaps nobody had seen. She thought the King's punishment was quite fitting. Nobody wanted to spend a night in the tower. Even observing it from a distance made the petite singer shiver.

While the King waited for Davina's answer, he finally greeted Sophia. “Always, Your Majesty,” she replied in a playful tone of voice that held no trace of flirtatiousness. As she rose and smiled at him, Aurora lifted her head again and gave him a frank, unblinking glance. It had probably been his deep booming voice that had interested her, Sophia thought. The monkey then turned her attention away, glancing  around the park while her tail fluttered back and forth over her mistress' fur cloak.

Davina was generous, asking the King to let the two mischief-makers to perform charity work as their penalty. Nicolette outlined the specifics of their penance, and Sophia grinned over at her. Now that was a punishment they were not likely to forget and they would think twice before being so reckless again.

When the Frenchwoman said that she would pay a shilling to see them performing the roles she had given them, Sophia piped up: “As would I.”

(OOC:  I wrote that Aurora was with Sophia in my first few posts, and then forgot she was there.  Figured this was a humorous way to mention her again.)

“Well, I hope His Majesty is not too hard on them. I seriously doubt he is pleased they caused a sleigh to flip over. Mistress Wellsley could have been hurt. She was probably an unwilling participant in their lark.”

Anne-Elisabeth smiled up at Lord Chatham as he placed his hand upon hers. She wondered what had happened to his eye. Maybe he just wore an eye patch to make himself look mysterious. It did add to his appeal. “I believe the prize is jewelry of some sort, which will most likely be yours, Lady Lucas.”

Her smile faded and she nodded at the older woman's condolences. “Thank you. It has been a difficult year for me, but it is time to live again. It is what my lord husband would have wanted, after all.”

She thought it amusing that she was now playing the grieving widow when before the race, she had shown no regret whatsoever that Arthur was gone, even joking at his expense. The Countess was a chameleon, showing each person she spoke to what they wanted to see.

The smile returned, though a bit more subdued than it had been before. “And don't worry, my lady. I assure you that I will not use you for target practice again.” A glance up at Charles, accompanied by an impish grin. “You, though, my lord, can consider yourself fair game.”

So the gentlemen who had just congratulated Lord Chatham was none other than the Spanish Ambassador. Anne-Elisabeth managed a rather clumsy curtsy and her hand tightened slightly on Charles' arm.

Another man approached them and announced that the King would join them soon. Boody hell! I'm going to have to curtsy again! I hope I don't fall on my arse in front of the King. Any impression I might have made on him at the ball with my limerick will be lost if I do.

Charles shrugged.

"I doubt they will be punished over harshly. Mistress Wellsley appears unhurt, and his Majesty is unlikely to be much angered by what amounts to youthful over-exuberance, I think." He laughed, and turned to Cordelia. "It should not take over long either, I expect, and so we shall soon see what our efforts have earned us."

He mirrored Anne-Elisabeth's impish grin as she mock-threatened him, before composing himself and inclining his head.

"You need but name the time and place, my lady," he told her gravely. "I am entirely at your disposal, but bear in mind that I shall not hesitate to defend my person and honour." He held his serious expression for a moment before laughter broke through once more. He almost managed to forget the looming threat of his impending agonising migraine.

Charles had just recovered from his merriment when Toldeo approached. Charles was in a good enough mood to forgive him for being married to Sophia, and brought out his best gracious manner to accept the offered congratulations.

"Are you acquainted with all the company, your excellency?" he queried, indicating each in turn. "My race partner, the redoubtable Lady Lucas, Lord Ogle, and his charming companion Lady Cambray." Again, not quite Versailles etiquette, but this was a relatively informal event at a relatively informal court. "My friends, it is my honour to introduce Lord Toledo, the Spanish ambassador."

He shifted minutely closer to Anne-Elisabeth, the better to support her as she curtsied. (And the better to use her proximity to hold off his panic at the thought of being stricken in front of the assembled courtiers.)

"It gets easier, I promise," he told her.

He nodded easily at the Master of Revels as the man approached.

"My thanks, Master Killigrew."

Joining the Winner's Circle

Beverley chuckled and whispered, "They have not the need to be careful. Foolish recklessness is mark of low birth. It is a wonder than Danby's son shows his face at all with his father in disgrace and fled."

Seeing that Davina seemed well and nobody hurt, Beverley replied, "Perhaps we should congratulate the winners?  It would be sporting to do so."

He steered them toward Lord Chatham's gatherers, for her rather liked the earl. Beverley liked most people who were militarily inclined.

"Our congratulations to the winners," he said, with a nod to Chatham and his partner. "I confess to, erm, driving horses far more poorly riding them, my lord. That was no easy task." Beverley had never even attempted to drive a cart.

Esteban returned Cordelia's recognition with a smile and a small nod himself.  "My lady."

Lady Beverley was whispering with her husband as they approached.  "Peregrine is said to be the black sheep of the Osbourne clan.  If Lord Danby is now fallen, does that mean that a black sheep of a black sheep is now a white sheep," she asked with her attempt at humor.

The King's Circle

The Tower of London was a fine enough place for gentlemen.  Overnight prisoners were kept in comfort there, hardly made to suffer the deprivations of base criminals.  The Duke of Buckingham had been ordered to spend the night there more than once.  The Earl of Chichester had experienced a refined confinement for a period of time after his odd confession of killing a woman already dead.  One could have all the comforts of home, for a price.

Peregrine smiled inwardly as Davina decided to do her gender justice with a merciful response.  However the idea of a monetary penalty was worse than most any punishment as he had no money.  With his father gone, there was no one to beg coin from.  As such, he lived off of the kindness of friends and mounting debt.  The King would know this too, so it made Danby's son brace himself for the worst.  George had little money too.  It was one of the reasons they were friends in a palace where they were surrounded by wealth that was beyond their reach except for acquiring a dowry.  It was Nicolette that suggested something far more embarrassing, but something far more affordable.

"As Lady Misrule speaks, so shall it be," commanded the King, pleased with an outcome that was not so predictable.  Fines were boring unless they were large.

"One of us lies like a babe and the other stands on knees and arms outside a palace entrance?" Osbourne sought to clarify.  Already he was devising ways to comply that would not be bad at all.  There were many things that the French Mademoiselle had omitted in her command, leaving them free to interpret the rest.  In the morning, few would notice he imagined.  With George's wound, Peregrine supposed he'd let George lie like a baby while he was on all fours nearby.

"We expect a convincing performance," the King added, as if he sensed the direction of Peregrine's thoughts.  Danby's son gave the King a pained look, unsure of what to do.  "We have two shillings raised already.  We expect many more contributed," the King continued.  Newcastle seemed to be in a good mood to see Danby's son brought low and he nodded his agreement.

Noticing the movements of the monkey around Sophia's neck for the first time, the King cocked his head at the ape, causing the ape to do likewise.  "Lady Toledo, would you be so good as to escort Mistress Wellsley back to the palace safely?"  Then, signaling Davina to rise, the King spoke to the dark haired lady.  "Mercy becomes a lady, as does holiday cheer.  It does us well to see you well."  Pausing to see what others might say, the King was prepared to lead Nicci and Newcastle to the winner's circle.

"Thank you, Francis," Caroline smiled back as the man then did follow. Actually it did not take him to catch up given his long stride compared to her more compact one.

Caroline made a beeline for the coach she saw Frances and an older woman enter. Was the girl ill or ....even worse injured? Perhaps struck by her jailer. No, even Lord Langdon would not be that stupid. Speaking of that man, he was there by the coach also. She did not wish a confrontation with the fellow but at least she had Francis with her. He would certainly stick up for her, unlike her female friends that earlier time.

Caroline decided she would try a new tactic. Instead of vinegary insults, she would use honeyed words.

"My Lord, I could not help but see Frances retire into this coach. I know you have your issues with me but put those aside for the moment as I intend to. I am simply concerned for France's well being at the moment. What happened? Is she in need of a physician?" she addressed the man in a tone of concern not confrontation.

She also tried to fill in Francis who was right next to her, "Lord Langdon's neice, Francis, likes me very much you see and I her. I am naturally concerned to see her in some sort of distress and wish to be of help if I can."

Quote

"As Lady Misrule speaks, so shall it be,"

Words spoken by the King of England Scotland and Ireland, and with claim of part of France (her own region even).

That sentence was definitely going to be recorded in her journal, it pleased her ears very much!

The young men agreed rather quickly, which surprised her. It must have got CR's suspicions up too for he then told them they had to make a good show.  Good. "Which does not include wetnurses for instance!" she added with a laugh.   Nicci did not look at the very proper Davina at that moment, who might faint dead away at such a comment in mixed company. Did she. Nicci peeked at Davina to see if she blanched.  (It was hard to tell because at that moment Sophia's monkey was also making it's mischief.)

Nicci winked to Sophia, who was becoming more and more relatable as she became more worldly.  It was a convenient moment to not pay too much attention to the Kings benediction upon her rival...

And then they were set to move towards the Winners.  Nicolette smiled towards Chatham, she certainly approved of her pairing with the old woman. No contest there.

The King's Circle

Given leave to rise Dvina did as bid a smile gracing her features as she looked across to the two who now had received their sentence.

"Why Madame you are far better then I at rendering 'punnishments' and I hope that a great sum shall thus be raised. They are sure to remember it and the fact His Majesty has said it shall be so will most certainly draw a far bigger crowd!"

This said to Nicolette and then she added "Wetnurse? Why that would most uncharitable to that good woman and it would not be fair to take away from a true babe. Do you not agree?"

Her blue eyes narrowed a fraction aware that the other was trying to stir her up. It was then that Sophia's nasty creature made its presence known and she watched it watch The King to which she said

"It would seem that you have charmed Lady Toledo's 'pet' Your Majesty which must be no easy feat."

"I thank Your Majesty for the concern and as you can see I am quite well - and all the better for Your saying it!"

She gave another curtsey but kept her eyes on her Monarch. Many had laid claim to a feeling that over-took them and Davina was no exception. Even in such a mundane place as this HE radiated such Charm and Presence and she knew a wicked thought or two giving her blue eyes an added sparkle. The rememberance of a long ago thought resurfaced and gave her pause. It WAS an outrageous idea at the time and was still ....

"Lady Toledo? I am sorry to cuse you trouble but I would be happy for any assistance."

The Winner's Circle

Anne-Elisabeth knew that Lord Chatham's seriousness was feigned and she chuckled when he laughed. “I would expect no less. However, I shall not name a time and place. You must be on your guard at all times, for a snowball may hit you when you least expect it."  Lowering her voice, she whispered into his ear: "Although if you want to make it a competition, we could decide on a prize in advance."

She was grateful for his support as she curtsied. “Delighted,” she said to the Spanish Ambassador after the group had been introduced.

“Thank you,” she told the one-eyed Earl. “I hope you're right. Snow is much more difficult to navigate than sand. Sand has its hazards but it isn't slippery. I hope you will grant me your assistance when His Majesty arrives. I will need to curtsy more deeply then.”

Yet it was another couple who arrived first to congratulate Lord Chatham and Lady Lucas. She hoped she didn't have to curtsy to them too.

Sophia wasn't surprised that Master Osbourne was trying to figure out a way to make his punishment less embarrassing, but the King had second-guessed him and commanded that they put on a convincing show. She agreed with Davina about the wet-nurse. There was no sense in dragging anyone down with them, even if the 'wet-nurse' was just a buxom actress they convinced to play the part.

When Nicci winked at her, she decided to offer a suggestion of her own. “To make it more realistic, maybe the 'baby' can lie in something that represents a manger and the 'donkey' can constantly munch on straw.” She wasn't completely sure that donkeys ate straw … she'd only seen them from a distance and knew nothing at all about them … but they always seemed to be chomping on something.

The King noticed Aurora and they both cocked their heads at each other. It was quite cute, really. He said nothing about the monkey and instead asked her to escort Davina back to the palace. “Of course, Your Majesty,” Sophia replied with another curtsy.

When the King's entourage was ready to go, Davina asked for her assistance. “It's no trouble at all, Mistress Wellsley,” she said, smiling warmly. Aurora was wriggling around on her shoulders and she pulled a gilded leash from her pocket and connected it to the golden lion tamarin's jeweled collar before settling her upon the ground. She then held out her free arm to Davina.  "Hold onto me if you're still dizzy from your fall."

She hoped that Esteban saw her and realized what she was doing. Although she wasn't an English subject and wasn't obligated to obey the King, it would not help Spain's already poor reputation if she had refused. And she truly did want to make certain that her friend got back to her rooms safely. She'd had quite a fright.

Lady Chatham & young Frances inside the Carrige | Charles stood outside the door with Caroline & Francis approach

Lady Chatham made quick use of the carriages curtains, allowing some privacy for ladies matters.  Her voice was a low murmur, while Frances voice was not heard at all. Shock perhaps.

Davina watched as Nicolette embelisshed onto her 'punishment' and felt a tugg of sympathy for the two Gentlemen and then resolved to follow up on Churchill to make sure that he had been attended to. This whole exercise had been one she'd not wanted to be a part of anyway and now this had happened. She would not add to it.

Her gaze rested back on that horrible little creature that Lady Toledo had hanging about her neck - she had never liked it from the very beginning of seeing it - and that had not changed.  She watched as a gilded leash was then put on and it was put onto the cold ground with its Mistress saying that she'd be happy to do as the King bid.

"I am not in the least yet shall be glad for your support nevertheless. Your Majesty."

She gave a curtsey and then stood quietly waiting for all the others to finish or for she and Lady Toledo to be dismissed.

Joining the Carriage of Courses...A poor place for men indeed

Francis' face illustrated his cluelessness as he looked helplessly at Lord Langdon.

Frances. Francis. Issues. Nieces.

Physicians.

"Shall I have one sent for, was she injured in the race?" Francis asked the younger lord, clearly knowing nothing of Langdon's past with Caroline. Though, if truth were told, looks would put both Francis and Charles around the same age and just as discombobulated at that moment!

Charles outside the Coach as Francis and Caroline Approach

While he was spared having to enter the coach, things took a turn for the worse as the French shrew arrived in the company of Lord Kingston.  Initially thinking that she had recruited Kingston to try and bully him, Langdon girded himself.  He would not be bullied.  He was well within his rights.

Rather than confrontation, Caroline tried concern.  Suspecting it was but a tool to gain possession of his ward, Charles stiffened.  They were in mixed company, so he would need to be polite.  Kingston thought her injured too.

"She is not injured.  I assure you.  She is merely feeling poorly and Lady Chatham is looking after her.  When she is feeling better, I will take her home," he announced.  His tone was formal but not belligerent.  Perhaps he had revealed too much information.  If Kingston was not present, he likely would not have been so forthcoming.

"So, you can see, there is no reason for concern.  She will be well enough soon."  he did not know how long courses lasted for young girls.  Were the same as older women?  Frankly, he would prefer to not know much about the details.

Sophia's idea had merit.  "Yes, some straw and swaddling clothes," the King agreed.  "Are they just to lie on the ground then?" Killigrew asked.  "We can't have the baby Jesus, in adult form, just laying on the pavement stones.  Maybe they need to build a crib big enough for one of them?"  Thomas looked about for approval.

"Very well.  Gentlemen, if you are to do this, you cannot be spending the night in the Tower.  Therefore, it is our wish that you remove yourself to your homes at once.  Build a rough crib, acquire straw and swaddling clothes, and a fur coat for the donkey.  You will accomplish this in time to be on display by 10 o'clock tomorrow morning, once it is light.  You are to stay there until dark whereby you will place a bucket to collect alms from passerby.  When darkness falls, you can leave and turn over the proceeds to Baptist May, who will see that they are properly dispensed.  Are you clear?"

"Yes, Your Majesty," both men answered with a bow.  They had been spared a night in the Tower, but they did not have much time to gather materials for the morrow.  "We shall leave at once."

"Have your shoulder looked at Master Churchill," the King counseled.

The King dismissed those who were awaiting it.

As Davina moved to walk with Sophia, her monkey screeched at her.  It was sometimes clear to animals when someone did not like them.  Aurora was becoming animated and refused to quiet down as she tried crawling into Sophia's hair and on top her head.  The others in attendance would note it.

Sophia was thrilled that the King liked her idea. Master Killigrew expanded upon it and she almost felt sorry for Masters Osbourne and Churchill. At least they were spared a night in the Tower. She had no idea that there were comfortable rooms there. Her fear of it stemmed from the history books she had read. It seemed to her that once one was sentenced to the Tower, one was a head shorter when one left. Even though she knew that wasn't always the case, it was still the way she envisioned it.

His Majesty dismissed them and she turned toward the castle with Davina. Before she could tell the other lady that she would support her however she wished, Aurora screeched and crawled up her fur cloak, onto her shoulder and into her hair. Trying to remain calm, she reached up and disentangled the monkey from her platinum curls and clasped her close to her chest. She would not have been able to hold her thus if her skin had not been protected by her cloak.

Sophia stroked her fur gently to soothe her while whispering soft words in Italian, the language she usually used with the creature. Whatever has gotten into her? She is usually so well-behaved.

"It is a little thing, Mistress Wellesley," she replied with a gracious nod of head, "The gentlemen shall surely raise to the occasion... Indeed, it is human nature to surmount every challenge.  Why perhaps we've given them too great an advantage already, none others tomorrow are so blessed with an audience for their success."

Nicolette meanwhile seemed to not hear Davina's other comment.

But overall the idea was lighting peoples imaginations, Sophia, Davina, Killigrew and the King. Suggestions were thrown about, the specifics even warranted a royal order in the end!  Now how about that... Nicolette was surprised at how little she needed to do.

While Davina and Nicci were not well aligned, they did agree about one thing however - and that was the awful monkey.  There was a great squawking from it as the ladies departed, and turning to see the ruckus Nicci softly tutted as the thing ran up into Sophia's hair.  Her hair style would be utterly ruined, and... "Perhaps it is no kindness to Lady Davina to convalesce near a creature so unrefined." Nicolette commented softly, before her eyes turned towards Chatham again.

Davina and Sophia Leaving

She watched as that thing created a scene then scrambled up to Lady Toledo's head.

"I will say in all Truth Baroness - I have no like for that creature that you carry about and offer no apologies. I thank you kindly for this escort and so shall hope you can contain it from further mischief."

"How lucky you are that His Majesty did not command it to be removed - pet or not."

"I am feeling suddenly quite peevish and want to find my rooms . There is not a need for you to see me all the way there Baroness. I hope you suffer no injury." (this alluding to the monkey)

"You had quite a good suggestion. Will you go there and deposit your coin? For myself I shall not but will see that Churchill is cared for with some quitness. No need to further draw attentions."

Caroline was relieved when Langdon did not act like a cur but gave her at least a respectful answer. He gave his assurances the girl was merely feeling poorly and there was nothing to be concerned about. Maybe.....maybe not. Caroline was loath to take his word for it. But she nodded as he answered her.

"Oh I so relieved then. Thank you for the information, I do appreciate it," she replied.

"Would it be alright if I could visit her on the morrow? In the company of Lord Kingston here," Caroline took a chance that Francis, her ever faithful mentor and friend would go along with this sudden revelation., "Just to chat with her and give her a little gift for the holiday season ...you understand?" she asked with a deferential tone and pleasant smile.

"We will leave right now Majesty," Osbourne offered.  Each minute that he remained, the courtiers would make his life more miserable, and that of George too.  "George we best get started on that crib," he signaled Churchill.  The King knew a retreat when he saw one.  He let the pair flee.

"An odd creature," the King acknowledged to Nicolette.  "Monkeys can do the most obscene things … in a humorous way of course," he judged as he led her and his growing entourage towards the winners circle.  "It is quite uncommon for a lady to try and domesticate them and use them as a fashion accessory.  More often I have found jovial men try and dress the monkey in bright colors and train it to do all sorts of things, even to try and steal jewelry we are told."  He was making pleasant small talk as they walked allowing Nicolette to be his brief escort for a time.  Maybe that could be added to her journal as well.

Arriving at the Winner's Circle

Thomas Killigrew held forth the royal pearls as the King and Lady Misrule arrived.  He presented them to the King who held forth the black velvet box to the Earl of Chatham.  He spared a glance at Cordelia assuming the Earl would give them to her.  "Congratulations my lord.  A race well run."

Young Henry was moping in the background trying to avoid his father's gaze.  "Do not be so glum Lord Ogle," the King bade.  "You and your lady almost had the day."  The King had completed negotiations with Newcastle for his son to marry the Percy heiress, so he felt obligated to try and cheer the man.  He had won a far more important prize than Chatham.

Esteban noted his wife exiting with Davina.  He wanted to stay in the company of the King for a while and would follow later.

"And to the rest of you, well fought," came the King's benediction.  That included Toledo and Beverley certainly.  Francis and Caroline had slipped away in another direction.

Davina and Sophia

Aurora settled down and Sophia sat her back on the ground. She wrapped part of the leash around her gloved hand so that the golden lion tamarin would not be able to reach Davina. “I understand. Most English courtiers feel the same way. Monkeys are uncommon pets here. In Venice, you see them often. Aurora was given to me when I lived there and I grew fond of her. She usually behaves well. Maybe the rough sleigh ride shook her up. I probably should have left her at home.”

She glanced back at the King, who was striding toward Lord Chatham and his partner. “I think His Majesty was amused by her. Doesn't he have quite a few exotic animals himself?” If he didn't have a monkey, perhaps she would give him one next Christmas.

“I'll walk with you as far as you wish.” Sophia was curious as to what the rooms of the Queen's ladies looked like, but she had not expected to be invited in, even if Aurora had not acted up. She and Davina had a tentative friendship at best, but Sophia hoped that they would become closer in time. “I am unharmed, though I might have been scratched if I had not been wearing such a thick cloak.”

The cold breeze stung her face as they walked and she would be glad when they reached the palace. Aurora scampered in front of her, every now and then stopping to sniff at the snow. Maybe there was something she found tasty buried beneath it.

Mistress Wellsley seemed pleased with her suggestion concerning Masters Osbourne and Churchill. “I thought they could use a little theatrical flair,” she laughed. “I'm not sure whether I will go or not. If I don't, I will sent my maidservant with my coin. If I do go, I'll contribute a few extra coins if they play their parts convincingly.

“And I do hope Master Churchill is all right. I met him once when I held a concert at Windsor. I've never been formally introduced to Master Osbourne. Do you know both gentlemen well?”

"A competition my lady? Well, I can never turn down a chance of sport, What stakes did you have in mind?" Charles asked, eye shining. He was rather enjoying this, but the arrival of Toledo and the subsequent introductions temporarily interrupted the conversation.

"In truth, I think I prefer the snow. I find that sand tends to end up everywhere," he told Anne-Elisabeth when they resumed, before further arrivals curtailed them once again.

He smiled broadly as Beverley approached. He rather liked the earnest young viscount, even leaving aside that the younger man was an acquaintance worth cultivating.

"Thank you, my lord. I'll confess that the horse did most of the work for me, I think. But you are a horseman? Perhaps we can arrange a race in the spring, when the weather breaks." Charles was no more than an average equestrian, but he was a sportsman to his bones, and he was reasonably certain he would not disgrace himself. The main thing was to show yourself both willing to compete and able to bear victory and defeat with equal equanimity, in any case.

"Are you familiar with the whole company?" he asked, ready to provide any necessary introductions.

At last, the King and his entourage approached. Charles greeted Nicolette with a smile and a nod, and the King with a sweeping bow. He held close to Anne-Elisabeth, ready to offer her whatever physical support she might need.

"I was ably assisted, your Majesty," he demurred cheerfully, indicating Cordelia, "and our steed had the heart of a champion, though the body of a Shire horse." He accepted the earrings and turned to offer them to Cordelia with a bow. "They would doubtless look better on you than me, my lady."

She noted how Lord Chatham retained still his hold wondering if that might be a direction she could Play even tho the Lady had professed an unbalance. She gave a curtsey to Lord Beverely and a murmured greeting.

It was then that they were all joined by the King and she gracefully sank into her reverance with a back very straight and head up but she kept her eyes downcast initially on a quiet "Your Majesty".

She had intended to remain thus until leave was given to rise but heard Lord Chatham extoll his virtues then offered her the Prize which had her stand and favor him with a smile adding

"Well, I shall except after such a pretty speech, thank you My Lord. Yet twas your on skill that managed to outrun the others after all so I shall have to think of a suitable 'reward' of my own. If Your Majesty approves of course."

Her gaze went to the Lady of Misrule memory tugging and taking her back to the Garden of Summer and how this French woman had presented herself and it would seem she was familiar enough now. She wonder if she was another lover of the Kings and her eyes held somewhat of a calculative look.

“Several things actually,” she whispered, “but there's not time to speak of them now with the King quickly approaching. We should make plans to discuss our competition in more detail on another day.”

Anne-Elisabeth laughed at his assessment of sand. “True, but snow can get everywhere as well, depending on what you do in it. I'll take the gritty feel of sand over the cold bite of snow any day.”

She glanced over at Lady Lucas and smiled while Lord Chatham was congratulated once again and then turned her attention to the King and Nicolette as they walked toward them. The Countess gripped tightly onto Charles' arm, curtsying as deeply as she felt safe doing. When she rose, she grinned at Nicolette and transferred her grip to the sleigh again so that the Earl could accept His Majesty's gift.

The monarch congratulated Lord Ogle and herself as well, and she glanced over at the young man as if to say 'I told you so.' His praise, she thought, was a fitting prize for second place.

“It was such a good race that perhaps it should be commemorated with a rhyme,” Anne-Elisabeth commented after the King had complimented the others,. “if Your Majesty and Lady Misrule agree.”  She didn't come right out and say that she should be the one who composed said rhyme, but that was what she hoped for.

Oddly perhaps. lodged in her journal under the date of 1st of January 1678 was absolutely no mention of a monkey.

Nicolette greeted Audley with a smile, which was presented in Cordelias general direction also.  A quizzical look towards Elizabeth Anne as she clutched Chatham’s arm, who still had not gotten the hang of how to stand up without aid, or had she?  Nicolette assumed it a female pretence (whatever works! An ambitious lady needs use every arsenal at her disposal.)  Her smile was warmest towards Lord Beverly, they had been having such a fine chat before she'd had to go sort carriages... and then she noticed that Sophia's departure had left her husband unattended.

"With three cheers for our winners!" In the midst of the presentation Nicci cheerily chirped the precursors for many hurrahs, "Hip hip - hurrah!"

The Spanish ambassador was quite handsome she thought, what could Sophia be doing wrong for him to ignore her.  She smiled his way, but then resumed her attention to the King, sliding her hand down the smooth of his coat she considered surprising him with a pinch of royal derriere.

"Ooh that sounds a fine idea Lady Chambray!" supported Elizabeth Anne's idea, "in a round robin!  Let us each have turns making a verse!  Who shall go first?"

The Winners Circle

There were muted cheers in response to Nicolette's call.  Others were gathering around the royal entourage.  The King nodded as Chatham was gracious in victory.

"Rhyme?" the King asked as if to clarify what he ahd heard.  He then remembered that Cambray had spouted a rhyme when Dorset had introduced her the night before.

"It seems that Lady Cambray has an appetite for rhyme," the King observed.  "Let her lead this round and any other may follow with a complimentary rhyme."  He had taken up the Lady of Misrule's invitation for a round robin, though he doubted many in the audience would have the skill to compete fully.

The Winners Circle

Anne-Elisabeth began composing a limerick in her mind right after she made her suggestion. She was a bit disappointed when Nicolette suggested a round robin. There were more courtiers gathering around them now, and she wanted to be the one to shine. The King unknowingly came to her rescue and suggested that she go first. She had wondered if he remembered the verse she had recited at the ball, and it seemed as if he did. How else would he know that she had a flair for rhyme?

“Very well, Your Majesty.” The Countess let go of the sleigh, because she thought that she would look foolish if she clung to it while reciting a verse. Hopefully I won't embarrass myself by falling again. If I stand still, I should be fine.

Her gaze traveled over the onlookers as she began:

“The highlight of this New Year's Day

Was a thrilling contest in a sleigh.

The gentlemen drove

While the ladies all strove

To hurl balls of snow in their way.

It was an exciting and very close race,

And Lord Chatham came in at first place.

With Lady Lucas beside him

To advise and to guide him.

They won with quickness and with grace.”

As he headed into the third verse, she turned her gaze to the King.

“After checking the sleigh that did fall.

His Majesty congratulated all.

And presented the prize

That dazzled all eyes.

And everyone there had a ball.”

The Winners Circle

Lady Lucas was not surprised when the French Madam plied forth her suggestions and it seemed that she and the Countess were already acquainted which might explain the eagerness of the later to join in.

For her part she would be a quiet bystander making the correct responses but had no intention of joining in. Not that she couldn't mind you but she thought herself ABOVE such things and yet The King had rasied no concern and she suspects that He enjoys this type of thing too well.

Her gaze returned to Lord Chatham who was curiously silent. He could hold his own if called out.

On 11/9/2018 at 3:03 PM, Caroline Despanay said:

Francis nodded at the younger lord, fully satisfied with the answer and still bearing a confused furrow on his brow. He was quite out of his element too. Lady's ailments were one thing about ladies he was happily ignorant about, whatever ailment it might be. No doubt there were tears. With a young lady there were probably hysterics.

Kingston had enough of young ladies and their dramas from his former wardship of Lady Toledo.

And then the lady was volunteering him for a visit the next day!

"I attend His Majesty until after chapel at the very least and have family engagements the rest of the day, unfortunately. Christmastide is busy with necessary well-wishes, especially Sunday," he replied, regrettably.* He smiled and said, "But surely you do not need a gentleman's company to visit a lady-friend."

Clearly, he had no idea of the history. He did not know that the girl was not a friend of Caroline's nor did he know that his friend was at odds with Langdon.

Instead he said to the gentleman, pleasantly, "I crossed paths with your younger brother the other morning on my way to accompany His Majesty on a walk..." In other words, ridiculously early. Earlier than normal courtiers were about. Something Lord Langdon would know. "Did he mention it?"

(OOC - bc Sunday has already happened for Francis, I'm limited in what he can possibly agree to :( )
