John Churchill

Full Name: John Churchill

Nationality: English

Title: Captain, in the Admiral's Regiment and Comptroller of the Household (York's Household)

Age: 27 (b. 26 May 1650)

Gender: Male

Eye Color: Blue

Hair Color: Blond

Martial Status: Single

Physical Attributes and Personality

A blond handsome rogue, Captain Churchill is a popular sight among court ladies. Intelligence dances in his blue eyes. He likes wearing sapphires.

Background

John’s father fought for the Royalists during the Civil War and, as a result, they lived in very modest circumstances until the end of the Commonwealth. His staunch support for Charles II paid off with The Restoration however, and one of the fruits of this was the appointment of 15-year-old John to the household of James, the Duke of York and Lord High Admiral, as ''Page of Honour''.

He and Barbara Palmer, Duchess of Cleveland were associated for some time beginning in 1668. Barbara Fitzroy was born in 1672, and, although she was acknowledged as Charles II's daughter, she was almost certainly fathered by John Churchill.

James gained the rank of Officer, in 1667, serving with the Foot Guard, and fought in the campaign in Tangiers, between 1668 and 1671. His conduct as an ensign in a Company of Guards that served as Marines to augment the Marines of the Admiral's Regiment during the Naval battle of Sole Bay in 1672 so impressed James, that he commissioned him a Captain in the Admiral's Regiment after four Marine Captains died during the battle. He fought in the campaigns in Flanders from 1672 to 1673, under the Duke of Monmouth. He held the office of ''Gentleman of the Bedchamber'' to James Stuart, Duke of York in 1673. He led a Battalion of the Admiral's Regiment in the Battle of Enzheim in 1674, under the command of the French general, Vicomte de Turenne. Having come to the attention of the French crown during this action, he moved on to the fighting in Alsace, where he fought with one of the leading generals of the day, Marshal Turenne. The war ended in 1674, and Churchill settled down to a peaceful life in England.

He is currently unmarried.
