To the Queen, by hand, Easter Morning

Delivered personally by Lord Mountjoy’s Majordomo: a wicker basket insulated with straw to keep the contents warm two dozen freshly made Berliner Pfankuchen (a jelly donut) with strawberry jam and  powdered white sugar.

A note attached reads:

Your Majesty,

Please accept this humble offering on this most holy of days as a pleasant reminder of your home country.

Your Most Obt. Servt’s,

The Lord and Lady Mountjoy

The young and very round queen wiped sugar dust off her lips. "Well I hope that this is a good sign."

Dorothea (whom the Karoline was sharing the treat with) nodded her head, and after swallowing added, "I couldn’t take another week like last was."

They had not seen Lady Mountjoy since she'd left to take Sunday dinner with her husband.
