Anne-Elisabeth Devereux
When Anne-Elisabeth returned from the Orangery, Sir John’s letter was waiting for her. Pulling out a piece of parchment and clearing a space on a desk cluttered with epic outlines and star charts, she wrote to Nicci. Quote Dearest Nicci, Sir John Burgoyne will be at the Little Park tomorrow at ten in the morning. I will give you about fifteen minutes before I show up pretending to be late. If you think you will need more time than that, then just let me know. Sincerely, Anne-Elisabeth P. S. Please burn this note after you read it so that there is no chance that anyone will see it and tell him that I tricked him. After sealing it, she gave it to Bess to deliver immediately. Nicolette Vauquelin
Nicci waylaid the maid as she read the note, "Please thank your Lady for me," she sent a verbal reply pressing a coin to Bess's hand for her trouble.
