Gilbert Burnet considers him "a man of clear and ready apprehension, and a quick decision in business." Not all of his peers are so gracious in their assessment of his character however, as he has been known to change political positions according to his benefit, rather than his belief.

 

Background

Born in Paris, Spencer inherited his father's peerage dignities at the age of three, becoming Baron Spencer of Wormleighton and Earl of Sunderland. He joined the British Army, reaching the rank of captain in the Duke of Cumberland's Regiment of Horse. He married on 10 June 1665. He then served successively as Ambassador to Madrid (1671–1672), Paris (1672–1673), and the United Provinces (1673). He currently serves as a Gentleman of the Bedchamber.

 

He married Anne Digby, daughter of George Digby, 2nd Earl of Bristol, on June 10, 1665. She was a renowned beauty, known for her intelligence and love of intrigue. They have had five children to date, of whom one has died in infancy.
