To Lord and Lady Chichester | by hand, Wednesday 21st

Recommended Posts

The letter was written with black ink, in a strong, sloping hand, and sealed in blue wax. It was accompanied by two bottles, one of Cognac and the other Armagnac, and a polished rosewood box. The box contained a crystal decanter and four ornate glasses in Venetian glass, all enamelled with the Chichester arms.

My dear Lord and Lady Chichester,

I beg your forgiveness for missing your wedding. I fear I suffer from attacks of migraine, and was bedridden with such an affliction until this morning. I would not, I think, have been a fitting guest.

I offer my sincere apologies once more, and wish you both every possible happiness.

Your servant,

Chatham.
