To Anne -Elizabeth, slipped beneath her room door Sunday Afternoon Late

That they had enjoyed some private time already he was grateful for but that only left him wanting. He perhaps had not been at his best and so wine could and would be blamed. Everyone had heard by now that some Troop of Performers was about to descend upon Windsor Town so this made for a perfect rendezvous between the two of them.

Hear tell that soon strange sights and encounters shall befall us all so you will no doubt be in need of my services. I shall make it my Duty to provide escort. I can hardly let that creatures mama be on her own suspect to who knows what. I shall come find you by ten of the clock Wednesday morn. Be ready. And wear proper footwear. There is said to be fog and no doubt damp as well and I suspect a breeze that will chill. A good stretch of the legs legs naturally leads to the need for warmth  ......

His writing was not flowery or curved. But rather straight up and down much like himself. There was no need for a servant as he knew where she stayed. He was swift and easy as he slipped it into her room. A smile of anticipation gracing his face as he continued on his way.

Marrouww!

Anne-Elisabeth sighed. “Be quiet, Crystal. I’m trying to write.” She was almost finished with the outline of her epic and needed silence in order to concentrate.

The white kitten mewled again and pawed at the door.

The aspiring poet looked toward the small feline. Now she was sniffing at a piece of paper lying on the floor. Curious, Anne-Elisabeth placed her battered quill in the inkwell (she tended to chew on the feather when she was thinking), got up and retrieved it. Crystal stood on her hind legs, her front paws braced against her mistress’ skirt.

Scooping up the kitten in her other arm, she carried her over to the bed and sat down. The note was from Lord Silverbridge, inviting … no, demanding … that she go to the circus with him. He must have slipped it under the door and Crystal recognized his scent and had wanted to go to him. She would have to tell him about that when he picked her up.

There was really no need for a reply, but she decided to send one anyway. Back at her desk, she carefully placed her epic outline to the side and wrote:

I will be ready. You know how cold I find this country. I shall be grateful for your warmth.

Folding it up, she sent Bess to his room to slip the short missive under John’s door.

There was no surprise in her acceptance. He had taken it as a given. There was no need for a reply as she had made it clear she would be waiting at the allotted time.

He could not help the grin that appeared a he made ready to go out. Now nothing had better interfere with his plans   ......
