Written on a piece of cream-colored paper, scented softly with rose and vanilla, and penned in Sophia's flowery handwriting:

Dear Lady Kendishall,

I am very sorry, but I will not be able to attend your party tonight. This morning, I fell and injured my ankle, and I am in a lot of pain. I'm sure that it will be a great success and that everyone will have a wonderful time. Perhaps you can tell me about it tomorrow night at the banquet at the Embassy. I will have to be there, of course, but I will probably be sitting down most of the time. Now I am glad that I will not be providing the entertainment.

Again, I deeply regret that I will miss such a splendid evening.

Sincerely your friend,

Lady Sophia

Sophia fastened a sprig of holly to the letter with a violet ribbon tied into a bow and sent it with a servant to be delivered immediately.
