Duncan Melville
A message written on white rag paper, with blue-black oak gall ink, sealed with the Melville coat of arms on viridian wax, and delivered by hand to the Buckingham suite in Windsor Castle. Quote Lord Kingston, Please forgive me for not keeping in contact as I should. My wife's death hit me harder than I realized, and I have needed to keep to myself for a few days until the bout of melancholy passed. To make amends, I send a small token of my friendship, to replace the painting we gifted to your ducal cousin some months ago. It is a mystery as to what it holds inside, so I hope you amuse yourself finding out what it is. In friendship, Melville The note was delivered along the lead box that Duncan had bought from master Sagredo, the curiosities merchant. It was nine inches by nine inches and nine inches deep. A templar cross was emblazoned on each side of the box, and a small cross covered the jammed locking mechanism. There were a number of scratches to the exterior, as if it had not been handled gently. When lightly shaken, it was clear that there was something metallic inside.
