A Royal Summons, Privy Garden Monday 7 am

Recommended Posts

At a nod from the King, John gave Davina a hand up so that she might receive her puppy without them losing her again! After all, His Majesty was very tall and the puppies were very squirmy.

Whether or not His Majesty had noticed the lady rebuff Kingston's offer of the same was unclear. Only time would tell if that would soon be a jibe.

"The options are aplenty, Mistress Wellesley, but as was said it was a request. It originated not from here," the King said, with a chuckle. He had promised the Queen never to shop amongst her ladies. And he had been rewarded with an impending heir, so he was quite happy with their royal arrangements. "You may name her as you like."

"You are most welcome Lady Sophia. Perhaps one day we might hear an impressive duet with consistent training!" He then chortled, "Or you might train her to sing when Toledo vexes you!" He might be her husband, but he was a Spaniard too, and the English quite enjoyed their joked on foreigners.

"Indeed, Chatham! My Daisy has seen too many poor examples, clearly! And as any parent with such a brood, she is happy that they are old enough to be something on their own now," His Majesty said cheerily. "There are still two more pups that you shall have the honor of naming the new owners, as promised*"

"THere is no doubt he shall charm the ladies with his rogue-ishness."

As for Kingston, the cub accepted the piddling puppy in good cheer, joking of how much the Duke would enjoy his new permanent houseguest. "I'Faith, that damned monkey!" He had forgotten about the monkey. There was a story that someone had gotten jumped on and groped at the Duke's party but that could be many a monkey, not just an actual monkey. "Monkeys and Scots! Your poor pup, Kingston. He had best be raised English."

"And, Kingston, this pup has a name." He said this with a maniacally wide grin. Kingston would know none of the puppies had a name to that point. "You are in the esteemed company of Giorgio."

Davina accepted the hand her smile still in palce as she stood and then took the little bundle into her arms. A small pink tongue appeared and then licked her chin before it snuggled into her new Mistress.

"Well then. How can I ever part with such a sweet thing!"

The King made it clear it was not from Him. She gave a little pout but then dipped into a reverance her eyes still sparkling

"Thank You Sir. I shall have to think since my first thought might now not be the best."

well I suppose Charlotte is out since HE didn't gift it ...

Others' were then presented so she stepped a bit off to one side and studied the little creature that she had silently profosed not to want or need. She really was a sweet thing and her markings were indeed such that she was as the King had said.

"It would be rather nice to have you about ...."

The puppy gave a little whine and so she held her a bit closer her mind full of what things must be got and where was she to sleep ....

Sophia grinned at the King. “Maybe we shall sing together at my next concert. I hope you will come to that one, Your Majesty.” He had not been present when she and Caroline had performed last week. She wondered if he had been told that he had missed a rare  and impressive surprise. Not many singers could break glass with their voices. She hoped that he would ask her to sing for him again, but that he would not expect her to repeat that feat of vocal power. It was unlikely that she would ever be able to do it again, though that knowledge would not stop her from trying when she practiced.

A chuckle escaped her full lips when he suggested that she train the puppy to sing when Esteban annoyed her. “Oh, but then, she will lose her voice because she will be singing all the time!”

As the King moved on to the others. Sophia set the puppy down and began playing with her by trailing the other end of the ribbon in front of her so she could pounce after it. However will I explain her to Esteban? Will his precious honor be offended because the King gifted me with one of his puppies?  The adorable ball of fluff would be a wonderful playmate for Juan’s first child. He would not be able to argue with that.

Charles considered for a moment. He had given some thought to the distribution of the pups last season, but circumstances had shifted since. His first thought now was Juliana, but he put that aside. He had no idea as to how well-disposed his Venus was to dogs, and she had already taken in Danby's strays.

Best to err on the side of caution, there.

Henrietta was his second, and that seemed a better idea, but he could not, even in such an indirect manner, offer her such a gift without first securing her father's permission to court her. Caution was due there, too.

"I should like to see one go to Mistress Jennings," he said, absently securing his canine counterpart in his grasp as it excitedly attempted to wriggle free. "She was kind and helpful when I came to court, and I would like to repay the favour. As for the last..." he bowed his head. "I shall have to beg your Majesty's indulgence for a day or two, to ascertain that matters are as I believe and hope."

He offered his sovereign the faintly rueful grin of the practiced cynic who had unexpectedly discovered optimism and decided to trust it despite himself.

(That was perhaps not precisely the state of affairs, but it was close enough to still be essentially honest, Charles assured himself.)

Francis grinned as the King laughed about the monkey.

"I swear, the pup shall be raised English and a loyal servant to the crown!"

That was about as much safe amusement as Francis was allowed to have, for then the King shot a cannonball right across his mast!

His blue eyes went wide. The King had named the pup after Buckingham! And was now sending Francis home to Buckingham, eventually, with said puppy...Giorgio.

"Is Your Majesty going to tell His Grace or am I?" he asked, cheekily, though it was probably not quite proper. The King very often liked it in such circumstances. Francis fully appreciated he was in between some sort of sibling rivalry and pestering!

(OOC - So sorry, I somehow missed that Davina had posted before the bump!)

The King gave a smile to Davina as she expressed that she would need to reconsider who the potential gifter might be. She surely was not going to get the answer from the King. He was quite amused to see where the lady's musings might take her into the throng of potential courtiers.

"If you sing with a puppy, we shall be sure to attend," His Majesty said to Lady Toledo with a deep, vibrating chuckle.

The King regarded Chatham with interest as he named those who were candidates for puppies. His Majesty was quite familiar with heiresses, for they were quite talked about amongst single gentlemen. "Of the Duchess of York's household? Then consider the kindness repaid." He raised a brow as Chatham asked for time to name the other. "Quite intriguing, Chatham. I shall be most interested to hear the entire tale when you deliver the name."

As to Kingston, he rapped the cub on the shoulder and said, "Oh, but you are going to tell him, of course! Though you may make clear he is Giorgio by royal decree. I expect a full report afterward!" He snickered in anticipation of the reaction of the real George. "But, perhaps not today as I have other things for His Grace to concern over. Giorgio can stay to keep Chatham's spare pup company." And he had other things for Kingston to do as well, but he did not wish to discuss that yet.

Davina Joining Sophia

She could hardly press His Majesty further so she just nodded and have him a nice reverance. She thinks that soon they, meaning the Ladies, will be dismissed and whatever was going on would be the topic.

To that end she went to where Lady Toledo was and quietly asked if she was well then suggesting that they might leave together when dismissed.

"You needs must be careful Madam and with a squirming puppy in your arms it would be too easy to lose step."

Davina and Sophia

So she had to sing with a puppy before His Majesty would attend one of her concerts? Sophia thought that breaking a vase with her voice was more difficult than training a puppy to accompany her when she sang. She would certainly try. After curtsying to the King, she began to play with her puppy. What shall I name her? All of my pets are named after musical terms, with the exception of Romeo and Juliet. Perhaps I should continue with the Shakespearean theme ...

Her thoughts were interrupted by Davina and she smiled warmly at her friend. “I think I will be okay, Mistress Wellsley, but I would feel more comfortable if you accompany me.” Ignoring the ribbon, her little puppy looked up at her sister in Davina’s arms and started whining. “We should plan a gathering for everyone who got puppies so that they can play together. If we meet regularly, then maybe they won’t miss each other so much.” And if she was able to see Charles more often, maybe she wouldn’t miss him so much either.

Davina and Sophia

"I shall accompany even if you said otherwise. " She whispered back adding a smile. "You are not thinking clearly Lady Toledo - all of them together here has been much so I can not think you want to repeat it!"

"And I have a mind to send this one onto Baintree's Bride yet that would not be fair to the animal so I shall end up keeping her."

She looked down at the small one nestled in her arms now quiet but those chocolate eyes not missing anything that was happening.

"They are all so playful and untrained and that is what must happen soon or else they shall run wild ......"

"His Majesty has refused to say why I have been so 'gifted' and from whom. Most unfair of Him."

She pouted a bit as her gaze was directed to the King.

"And so I now must think of WHO it could be amongst all the Gentleman I know."

Charles smiled and inclined his head in gratitude to the King.

"My thanks your Majesty. I hope I shall be at liberty to provide you with both name and story soon."

He adjusted his grip on the pup again as it continued its wriggling. The audience was drawing to its end, he sensed, and so he settled back to await dismissal.

Perhaps Davina was right and the puppies would be too much trouble all together. Sophia and her Eros could still take theirs on walks together, meeting ‘accidentally’ in the park or the gardens.

Her puppy was still whining for her sister. With a motherly sigh, she sang the note that she was whining. Again, the little canine looked up at her new mistress curiously. Sophia scooped her up in her arms while Davina mused as to whom had given her such a wonderful gift.

“Having a secret admirer is exciting, is it not? I’m sure he will reveal himself when he’s ready.”

The petite singer said nothing about her own secret admirer.  The Italian had led her to believe that he was a noble, when he was really a professional swindler who preyed on  innocent young ladies.  He had said that he loved her, but he had just been after her money. She was fairly certain that he had tried to kidnap her, but she had refused to meet the carriage of a man who would not give her his name.  Not long after that, Esteban and Lord Kingston had found him and his accomplice. He had been killed and his accomplice had drowned after he had been shot. Sophia had not been told that his body had never been found.

Davina was not as naive as she had been. Hopefully, her secret admirer was a handsome gentleman who was trying to impress her so that she would marry him.

“I hope you will tell me when you discover his identity,” she whispered. Her puppy had curled into her arms and was fast asleep.

"Is it?" She said back.

"It is interily possible that its some old Gentleman who's been about Court for ages and is looking to feather a nest!"

"Well I have no desires to go in that direction. But it is also possible it is as you say Lady Toledo - and I shall indeed let you know."

"Do you think we shall be dismissed soon? I think there are things afoot ...."

"Did you not think it odd that we were all suddenly shuttled inside and here of all places?" She quielty whispered.

"Why tis hard enough for Gentleman to enter this Private part and tis a certanity that I would never. And there are extra guards placed about - I noticed when we came in."

"I think even Lord Chatham smells something in the wind."

Davina seemed to dwell on the more negative aspects of having a secret admirer. “True,” Sophia agreed. “But he could just as easily be a young gentleman who is smitten by you, one with looks, wealth, and a title.”

She was glad that her friend planned to let her know who it was when he finally divulged his identity. Hopefully, he wouldn’t keep her guessing forever. If it was a shady Italian, she would warn Davina away from him.

“You think something is amiss? It was quite muddy outside and I can understand why His Majesty didn’t want to present us with muddy puppies. They would, of course, want to roll around in it.  It is strange that he brought us here instead of receiving us in one of the drawing rooms or even his presence chamber.” Sophia was rather happy how things had turned out. She had seen a part of the King’s private chambers that nobody but his most trusted gentlemen and his mistresses would ever set foot in.

“I never really counted the number of guards when I visited his presence chamber, but there does seem to be a lot of them. I wonder if an intruder was caught in the palace and His Majesty needed to retire to a place of safety.” That seemed like a logical explanation to her.

As for Lord Chatham, if he got a whiff of anything, Sophia hoped that it was her perfume.

The ladies might suspect that when His Majesty dismissed them, the gentlemen might talk about something sinister. In fact, the King had nothing of the sort planned. Yet.

First he intended to mention to the young men that the Merry Bunch of Lazy Dolts were skirting a wager. Then he planned to send Kingston to see to ladies, for which he had a singular temperament. After he intended to speak in more detail about the sinister happenings. Not that the ladies would have much of an idea why there were sinister happenings in the first place.

"Now, even the King must ready for chapel, so our time must be brief for now; though there will be required puppy updates." He chuckled, "Ladies, Ashburnham will see you out. Chatham, there is another matter that would have you stay for a few moments." The King had already instructed Ashburnham to tell Kingston his attendance was required the rest of the day, so that should shortly leave him with the two gentlemen.

(OOC - That will wrap up this thread for me. You can feel free to post wrap up posts or have Davina and Sophia exit and continue to talk together. Make sure you aren't being clairvoyant about what's going on 😄 Chatham & Kingston have already been having their continuation thread in another thread.)

She had to laugh at that remark.

"Madam you may well be right and so I shall live in Hope that the sender is indeed as you say!"

"I do not know of a certain that there is something amiss tis just such an odd thing to bring all of us here. Perhaps I am over-thinking?"

She gave a shrug and then turned round as His Majesty addressed them all.

She gave Sophia a 'see I told you so look about being sent away' then added

"Well. So that is that. Let us then allow Ashburnham to play escort and then I shall see you safely deliverd where ere you wish."

She gave the now dozing puppy she held a light kiss on its head thinking that if she remaind as this she might well just keep her!

Sophia wished the best for Davina. She was lucky that she could choose her own husband. If her secret admirer did turn out to be a lascivious old geezer, she could always turn him down and still keep the puppy. The little spaniel was innocent and had not been able to choose the gentlemen who had given her as a gift.

“I feel the same way, that there was some reason that we were brought here of all places.” The petite singer shrugged. “At least we’ll be able to impress people by telling them where we met the His Majesty.” A pretty frown creased her forehead. “Or not. They might get the wrong idea as to why we were called to his chambers.” A rumor that the Spanish Ambassador’s wife spent a morning in the King’s rooms would not please Esteban.

The monarch dismissed the ladies, but asked Charles to stay. She had been hoping that she could convince him to be their escort just so she could spend more time with him, even though privacy would be out of the question. Looking toward him, she shifted the sleeping puppy in her arms so that she could touch her cheek with one delicate finger.

As they were shown out, she smiled at Ashburnham before turning her attention back to her friend. “I wonder what His Majesty meant by ‘puppy updates.’ Do you think he will call us all together again?”
