Nicolette Vauquelin
Louis paused long enough to close the door, a detail that Nicolette noted she was trapped, then lifted her chin. As though closing the door was what she'd wanted all along. So the French beauty drifted across the room, coming to pause leaning against the bureau, lingering there as he poured drinks she picked up some small thing and inspected it before putting it back. Oh dear, she just knew she was in trouble! But played at innocence as best as she might, how would this go? Her dark eyes rounded to watch him carefully as he, drinks in hand, approached. "Only after? Oh pooh* Louis, but I've really nothing to tell." (though her eyes had flared a little as he claimed to know she had a secret). "Mmm... and besides," taking the offered glass she smiled sweetly, "I think we both know that a little mystery only inflames a relationship. Full disclosure however, is rarely as enthralling… you do not really want to reduce me to the mere mundane do you?" Thinking herself winning after such a sultry statement, she slid into His own office chair and with a grin took a sip of her drink. * Nicci has been using these very english terms now and then and thinking herself clever to do so. Louis Killington
"Mystery, my treasure, is for those you wish to seduce," he corrected as he handed her the the glass, He sat near the fire and she took his office chair, away from the fire, Another sign that she wished to hide something? Louis smiled as she did so. It was amusing certainly, for she signaled a desire to do things her way.. "Cousin, you have guilt painted all over your face. I know you too well. What did you do? Best to disclose before I learn of it myself." He crossed his legs, sat back in the chair and slowly sipped the brandy as if he had all the time in the world. Nicolette Vauquelin
"You assert I have no further use of mystery upon you Cousin?" She replied silkly... Louis had taken a chair by the fire, pretending that was what he'd intended all along. This game that they played would never grow tiring - Nicci for her part leaned back in his chair and let her fingers idly toy with the drawer handles. If one opened and she might examine the contents so much the better. "... la, but I forgive myself for my pleasure in teasing a past conquest never the less." Did she look guilty, Nicci thoroughly doubted it, he was playing bluff, trying to turn the cards. "Then pacify yourself with my assurance that this evenings diversions have been the very least memorable since at London. Yet for you, you cannot surely claim the same. Two lads stolen from under Danby's watch hmm? Am I overoptimistic to hope that it was his trade for return of his daughter? Sacre Bleu Louis, that woman would be best thrown in the Thames, and even the father must realise that. They say it bloats bodies beyond all recognition…" For a moment she paused to wonder if she’d change her tune if Bridget actually did turn up dead one day? A small smile paused her lips, what an enjoyable quandary to consider.
Louis Killington
Did his eyebrow arch as she began to play with the handles of his drawers? He steadied his expression and sipped again at his glass. He was about to caution her but thought better of it. No doubt she was just trying to toy with him. She was seeking an advantage, suggesting that he was a former conquest. "You do not deny your guilt cousin," he reminded her as she attempted to change the topic to the more important one. It might take persistence to coax the guilt from her lips. "I traded nothing for the boys," he assured her, much to her dismay no doubt. "I merely freed them from their predicament. I assured Danby that they would be free to join him later, as if there was a scintilla of that occurring." He found himself laughing at Danby's misfortune. "Bridget is just a plaything Nicci. I had hoped some gentlemen present at Caroline's party would relieve her of her ... properness. I had hoped that you might coax her into some randy gentleman's arms. I do not wish to be the person that breaks her in. I would rather be the one that ... counsels her afterwards. Did you see how she kissed Buckingham, not knowing that the Duke is one of her father's primary enemies? That she did it in front of the King made the act all the more entertaining. That was worth going to Caroline's party alone," he laughed. "Is that jealousy I hear from you cousin?" Now it was his turn to claim an advantage in their banter. "She could never compare to you cousin. You are fine porcelain and she is but a small lump of clay." Was she assured of that? Louis did little to settle the matter, preferring instead to toy with the handles on the drawers of her mental and emotional "desk." "If I must, I shall gift her a dildo to do the deed," he lamented. "Where is Lord Roos when you need him?"
Nicolette Vauquelin
"Deny? Certainly not - I relish my guilt." she sallied in return, "Is not guilt what sets us apart from the beasts... mmmm, that and the relentless pursuit of distraction." Oh how she enjoyed this sort of conversation, there was not nearly enough of it's sort at Whitehall. Alas, the draws were fastened, their contents would continue to remain a mystery to her - reaching forwards she took up the quill instead, and expended it's ink doodling upon the blotter-pad. In further bad news Bridget was not returned - though the woman hardly deserved any further thought. "So Lord Danby is quite desperate isnt he, to believe such unlikely lies. A man with more avenues at his disposal would question such a promise, I am sure." she mused. Yes the desperate were likely the ones easiest to deceive. But then he spoke of Bridget again. He thought her a grand joke, and how he laughed of his fascination with Danby’s daughter. Nicolette merely pouted in reply, and wrote a nasty word in French. "Of course I am not jealous." she looked up from her handiwork, "Though I contest that your motive in this is rather different than you claim. Why if you cannot admit, or even see it for yourself, then perhaps the only one you are deceiving in that relationship is yourself." "You are encouraging her to love you Louis, she is glue at your side doting and adoring you. All of court knows the only wood she'd let you feed her is the one attached to yourself. Her eyes are plainly set, and you love it. It is nothing to do with corrupting a past rivals daughter, but all about your own ego Louis. If I did not hate her so much, I'd pity the poor idiot. Yet I have the strongest feeling that when you are finished with her, she shall not be finished with you. That derriere of yours shall pay for the sport one day - there, I have told you so." Louis Killington
"My mistake, " Louis played along. "I had always thought the difference between us and the beasts was a soul." This was not to be a serious conversation however and he needed to steer it away. "Guilt is a heavy mantle to wear cousin. Let me lift the burden from your shoulders," he offered with a sparkle in his eye, the attempt at persuasion being obvious. "A burden shared is only half a burden," he reminded her. Of course, he still was unaware that her guilt had anything to do with him. Nicolette was astute in her observations about Bridget; but then, he knew her to be a clever gal. He smiled over the rim of his brandy glass as she revealed her thoughts on the matter. It gave him time for a good long sip. "If a lady like yourself causes men to fall in love with her and manipulates them to do her bidding, she is applauded. Yet, when a man does the same to some poor lady, he is a villain? Of course I am encouraging her to fall in love with me. There is only so much entertainment one can take from seeing a rivals daughter ruined. It is too fleeting. The entertainment is far better to make her beholden to me. She may be of use in my future plans, another piece I can move in the Game. You should know that," he purred. Now that she was becoming a first rate flirt, Louis imaging that Nicci could have a gaggle of admirers bestowing gifts to her if she wished. Instead, she had set her sights on the most important piece in the Game. "Face it, we are peas in a pod you and I. We both need admiration and love aplenty. Oui?" Nicolette Vauquelin
And she was all to pleased to let that topic slide. Louis made a final mock-attempt to get it out of her, but it was the least convincing argument of the lot. "Mmm...." She merely shrugged and smiled. Surely he did not believe that theory any more than did she. Her fire was properly lit by his comments on Bridget though. "Then you admit that you mean to do her favours!" The French girl alleged with barely concealed dismay. "That you intend to make her beholden to you tells me all." A sudden distressed energy within prompted her to stand, "but." features usually so pretty were rearranged, and she knowing her lack of composure at that point did turn and look away. "So this is your 'good for the goose - good for the gander'? This is your retaliation for what I must do?" Did he even know who she was, and how all of this affected her. This thing with the King, if it even was a thing. Bracing back her emotion she turned back to Louis and said, "I may play the sport but the sport does not define me, it is as much a charade as anything at court. If we are similar then I would hope that you were that way too. In boredom we might distract ourselves the days amusements but with no greater seriousness than a cat may play with a mouse. The only truly enduring thing in life is ones family, all the rest is expendable to us, and to them. I hardly think the games I play are enduring - though I had hoped that that which passes between you and I was different." She was very upset that he intended endure with Bridget. Louis Killington
Nicci's jealousy was clearly written on her face. He had expected her to disguise it better. It was possible that she would see what he was doing as merely ill-advised, but she worked herself into a lather about it. He was left to wonder idly how much of her upset was attributable to the love she felt for him and how much was something more shallow. Vain creatures, like Louis, often disliked people merely because they competed for the attention of their admirers. "Favors for her are but trifles Nicci. Escort her here and there. She is foolish enough to think my company embellishes her reputation rather than tarnish it. I had half expected that you would call me cruel for the attention I show her. Is it not ironic that my cruelty to her will breed her adoration for me? Perhaps I should be more concerned about my soul," he offered lightly. "The girl is a plaything, a sport, a minor piece on the board.. Of course it is a charade mon cheri. My love for you, Lisa, and my son is enduring. Le Game brings fleeting relationships and alliances, but every player, no matter how skilled, needs a foundation to rely upon. That is family. But, it is not all family ... rather only family that recognizes the obligations that come with it. It is like the oath we whispered to one another. It is not fleeting. We are both bound for life, you and I, even if we must pretend from time to time that our only bond is blood relation." By that he meant Lisa. But others, including the King and Buckingham, would need to remain ignorant of their closeness. "But, in all seriousness cousin, tell me what, other than family, defines you." Hoping that she would turn to face him again, he motioned her to come join him. "Come sit beside me and bask in the warmth of the fire and my love, and let us look into each other's souls shall we ... or at least share a decent brandy," the last was offered with an inviting smile in an attempt to soften the strong serious overtones of their conversation. Nicolette Vauquelin
His reply made perfect sense from his own view point. Nicolette sighed, her shoulders easing - at least he revealed his heart was not involved. She loved him to much to hold upset against him. "I just..." she turned back towards him as her own reply failed expression (vocally at least). She was jealous, both of them knew it, it was a childish and foolish emotion that was never the less very real. Rather than say any such thing she crossed the floor towards him, joining him in the fires warmth and reaching to embrace though it was not so easy done while he was seated still. "I remember our oath." she whispered of the cherished memory and fell hush in the moment. "How do I define myself I hardly know. The morality of it all these plans are sometimes difficult to... justify. I like to think I am a good person, like how I see you as a good person too, but sometimes the things we do are not good nor honourable. This thing I do with the King, has certainly not been a path of conscience clear. The moment to moments are fun enough and cheer, but then after in reflection it's hardly what I had wished myself to be. Perhaps that is what it is like for you with Bridget too? The moments might seem amusing enough, but afterwards... well, tell me truthfully Louis, when you are ready to be rid of her, you shall not have the heart to be as cruel as you say. You shall ease her transition, even though she is so fool as not to deserve your care that day." “I have booked too many things on your accounts Louis.” She finally admitted. Louis Killington
Louis sought to return the embrace even though he remained seated with a glass in hand. She would be free to sit on the armrest beside him, or on his lap surely. There was another chair a bit firther away, but he doubted she wanted space in that moment. He was kind enough to let the matter of jealousy drop. She seemed to see the folly of it; but jealousy was a powerful force and one not easily contained for long. He was jealous of her own dalliance with others, but had convinced himself that he must abide it for the greater good. "Morality is a tricky thing Nicci. I have done some terrible things in past relations with women." Had he not impregnated a flock of them and denied parentage? He had another committed to an asylum where she died bearing his child. He liked to think he had outgrown his juvenile cruelty and progressed into a more refined cruelty, a kind more artful in its unfairness. "The Catholics allow you to wash away your sins with indulgences purchased with gold, or a confession. We Protestants are left with private communications for forgiveness; but, God moves in mysterious ways, or so I am told. He created a world full of evil and goodness, yet mankind is neither and both. We are creatures of grey, and we should embrace that neutrality if we are to exalt our purpose," he opined. "Priests would have you believe that we are to do nothing but praise God all day, but one need not create a complex world for that. Pastors would say that we should help the lowly, perhaps doing nothing but baking bread to give to the poor with our own hands. But then, why di God give us gifts?" he queried. "We are two most beautiful creatures. You do not need beauty to praise God or bake bread. And we are both clever and witty. Again, those traits are meaningless in reciting the Psalms. No, I think we have been given gifts to use them to rise to greatness. Mankind is ever in competion. It is at the core of who we are. Thus, it is just as reasonable to say that the world is a test ... a competition. Some are given gifts that give them an advantage. Is that fair? No. Would failing to use those gifts be fair? No. It is not about fairness. It is about success. It is a competition, a game, that mankind plays over and over. Both of us can accomplish anything we want, so why not? Why not use our gifts to control others and to control events? There is plenty of opportunity to help our fellow man when we are at the top. If we commit sins along the way, we can atone for them. It is the primary tenet in all Christiandom. Men sin and they will be forgiven. That sounds like a divine recipe for a competition on Earth. The world, and this court, is full of immorality. If we use immorality as a tool, rather than a goal, then I think we are saved." "You are not seeking to seduce the King merely to be cruel to the Queen. No. You use it as a tool to gain power. Even better, you can have fun along the way. No, I should not feel guilty about it. Half of the Court would gladly share the King's bed if it meant an office or title for themselves or a loved one. Some use their body. Some use their flattery or wit. It is all the same. They can be insincere gestures to earn favor. You have the power of all three mon cherie. In that regard, you are quite dangerous." He offered a pleased smile. "The same is true for me. Let us revel in our dangerousness and we will have ample time later to make good on our sins." His smile widened. "I suppose I can be kind to the girl when I release her, if she has shown me loyalty. Cruelty is now reserved for those that deserve it, or situations that will advance our standing. Kindness is more potent in gaining friends, and it will strengthen our hand as long as we do not become weak because of an inability to scare potential enemies and rivals." He finished his glass of brandy and chuckled to himself briefly. "I suppose I have had more brandy than I knew, for I have chattered on without employing any real theorem." He reached to take her hand in affection. The disclosure about her spending his money took a moment to sink in. The smile began to falter. He had not expected such an abrupt disclosure. "What do you mean? How much have you spent?"
Nicolette Vauquelin
Yet with the contrariness that was upon her that evening she opted neither for armrest nor lap, but chose to kneel before the fireside, the glow of embers upon one cheek with opposing side cast into darkness - as she came to muse morality good and bad. Louis voiced his preferred stance of life between the extremes of light and dark. "However you view priestly advice, it is the good book that sets the boundaries, that tells us the extremes that we might then live between." She mused, attributing Louis with more Christian devotion than he would personally admit to owning. "And yes I agree we ought do our best to progress, there is some inbuilt desire within us to strive, that desire is likely born from The Lord also. To resign, to stall or resist the natural urge for advancement might be a sin also. As ungodly as a flower that refuses to open." "Mmm. I am just a little conflicted at times, of who I was, and what I become. The simple life left behind, and the complexities of what I would embrace. Perhaps I am angry of that Danby girl because her naive outlook reminds me of what I no longer have. Even though I do not want to go back." She paused and made a smile, looking back to Louis then, "Were you truly horrid to women in your youth? I truly cant imagine it." Drawing a breath, she realised Bridget was not bothering her so much. "It feels better to have talked about this." It also felt better to hear that Louis would decide how to treat the Danby girl based on how things were in the future. He truly did not sound bound to her at all. Bridget was but a flutterby in his much larger and more meaningful life. "Then take another glass my love, for your chatter is a summer days rain shower of wisdom, I would satruate in it for with each droplet my understanding of life grows." scooting closer she leaned back against his shins, gazing at the fire musing what he'd said about the tools at their disposal. Immorality being one such, and the difference of it being used to reach a goal, opposed to it being the goal itself. "It shall be an interesting journey." she softly said. Yet then he asked how much she'd spent. "I do not know, I did not ask the cost, I just put them upon your account. To ask the actual price would have made it seem like you could not afford it Louis, I would never imply that insult." She bit lip, hoping he accepted that logic. Louis Killington
Nicolette positioned well her features for the talk of darkness and life, her own face almost the mask of half smile and half frown. "Well put." Her analogy of a flower that refused to bloom was inspired. He would need to borrow that one day. "The simple life is for the simple dear cousin. Before knowing you better I might have believed that the simple life might hold some appeal. But, it rejects that for which you have been made by God himself. Your own words acknowledge. Let the plow horse work the field mon Cherie. You are a thoroughbred, born to race. One day, you can be put out to pasture for the simple life; but, let us ensure that day is long in coming. Bridget is a plow horse masquerading as a thoroughbred because she was sired by one. Is it so wrong to encourage such a plow horse to dream of racing and acclaim?" It was a rhetorical question. "Do not envy the girl anything. She was born with every advantage because of her father but displays no ability to be worthy of it. You were born with little advantage of your father but have displayed gifts far beyond what others could dream about. She would be right to envy you dear cousin, not the least because of your many gifts but also because of the true love I have for you." As she scooted near, he allowed his fingers to dally in the dark curls that adorned her head. "It shall be the journey of a lifetime," he assured her. As for finances, he begrudgingly acknowledged the wisdom of her lack of bargaining. Women were supposed to be bad at such things. If necessary, he would send Thomas to convey outrage at any unfair pricing. "What did you purchase then?" That would give him an idea as to how much was spent. "Are you telling me that you have spent all the money I was planning to spend on your gift?" he offered lightly. "If you purchased more than two pair of shoes, it will be my turn to paddle you." Nicolette Vauquelin
His fingers in her hair felt quite lovely, and Nicci's eyes slid closed as she savoured the feeling while his voice, deep and thoughtful, warmed. He compared her own and Bridget’s birth right and upbringing, his conclusion not what society might have thought. "If I had her beginning... but no, I am glad I am not like her." What reluctance she'd felt to move closer to him eased, and she shifted about and crawled herself upon onto Louis' lap. "How do you know it is true?" she whispered the question of love as she pressed to give a kiss. He could understand her logic in not asking something so 'petty' as prices - of which she was pleased, however it had never occurred to her that he'd had a budget in mind for her own gift - and that this might cut into it! "Oh dear." her brow crumpled with concern. Though surely he was jesting? He was joking of a paddle (she was certain of that, mostly.) So Nicci gave another smile, though more hesitant now. "No I didn’t spend it all... ah, well probably not. It was just a few things, a well, a shrunken head and a complete set of miniatures of the new model army, or I think that is what it was, little soldiers all cast in lead and painted wonderfully. All quite old, but I was assured that every piece was present. And, maybe just a couple of other smaller things, gifts about town, a book, a pocketknife, pillowslips...little things. " How much would that have cost? "Mmm... there is probably plenty left for a locket," she suggested optimistically, "or hair comb, or a jewellery box, I have not a jewellery box." Louis Killington
"It is true because it is not feigned," Louis answered simply. The love of Bridget, in contrast, was feigned. Now that she climbed into his lap, he was happy to meet her press for a kiss. After a tender one delivered, he added "I know your love for me is true because, frankly, I am irresistible to you, just as you are to me. See how you could no longer resist my lap?" he asked in a gloating fashion. As for her gift, it seemed as though she had not broken the bank, though a collection of soldiers could be pricey. As for what she wanted, her list was easy enough. It was dangerous to buy a lady a jewelry box for her very next complaint would be that she had no jewels to store in it! It was far safer to give her the hair comb. Yet, she wanted the box more than the others, so he would indulge her. Had he not called her his treasure? Surely it was apt to give her a box to store her treasures. "I suppose I might have a few shillings left," he replied with a serious seeming voice, waiting to see if she would take him as serious. Nicolette Vauquelin
Ack! She'd known from the moment they entered the room that that had been the game - and now she relented, and he gloated of it. "Oh Louis." she groaned her disappointment and made half-hearted attempt to get up, while knowing all along that had the tables been turned she too would have been the one gloating. Yet the talk of a gift for her, from he himself was enough to make her stay, and to kiss him again. It was too sweet a place to be after all. "A jewellery box would be the finest thing, here at the beginning of a life with means to fill it. And you have assisted me to that position." she freely acknowledged that fact. Nicolette was under no illusions to the reason that some of her gentlemen friends had given her tokens -- it had been directly upon account of her relation being upon the rise in the royal treasury. Oh, and perhaps a hint here and here from her had helped just a little (show a man an empty neck with a pretty smile, and it created some manner of compulsion within them - which was a good reason not to actually wear the necklaces she'd been so far given.) "Make it a large one, and..." her eyes glinted as she playfully suggested, "with a depth marker inside it."
Louis Killington
Had her groan been a recognition that he had won the opening salvo of this banter between them? Perhaps. He could not resist a triumphal smile. Yet, she was wise to focus on things other than her spending, for it was sure to vex him. "Shall it be deep enough that I should commission a ladder?" he jested. It was a jewelry trunk that she wanted, not a box. "We shall see. Perhaps you need multiple boxes ... to be secreted in multiple locations. A scheming lady can never be too careful," he whispered before giving her another kiss. He found himself stroking her thigh this time, now that she sat upon his lap. He was finding the closeness of her form, the smoothness of her skin and silk, and her scent somewhat distracting. "So tell me, who besides the King should I be jealous of? You could charm the entire court, of that I am certain, but which men and women have you marked as those to join our inner circle?" Nicolette Vauquelin
Nicolette was laughing as he suggested a ladder, and played along with the outlandish thought. "Should it come to that I shall need silver boots to descend down into it, lest my ankles be grazed by all the rubies and sapphires!" More sensibly though she clarified, "Just one ought to suffice." and sliding her hands around his neck she thought to kiss him once more, an indulgent lingering kiss. "It might be lovely for it to have your family’s crest on it, it shall be a memory of my time with you. It's probably too late to arrange anything like that now, but perhaps for my birthday next year?" Leaning against him, time felt dreamy and soft. His question when it came gsve her pause, she'd not have thought he might be jealous of her also. He always seemed stoic, aligned with yours ways. "Apparently I am going to be most single eyed in my devotion to the King." she gave a sigh at that, she'd not been entirely delighted with that news Francis had belatedly relayed. "Yet our circle shall be magnificently diverse, surely." she assured, "you need not wonder though, my dearest -- there are no surprises waiting in the wings." "Are there any that you would recommend?" Her fingers stroked though the nape of his hair, “You do know I find a strange sort of delight in fetching people for you.”
Louis Killington
"Perhaps a box where we leave it later with the silversmith to engrave the coat of arms," he suggested. He would send Thomas with dispatch to get the nicest box he could find on the morrow. The lingering kiss was received and returned in kind. Why not? It was a most pleasurable thing to do. "Oui, you must be loyal to the King," he repeated, "though that look in your eye and your manner suggests that you are eager to try new foods before you are restricted to a solitary diet." Newly liberated ladies, in his experience, were the most insatiable to taste the exciting pleasure that was now open to them. "Magnificently diverse indeed," he replied with a pleased smile. "There is no one to target, It is best when you bring home strays that could be useful. To go after the elites would be too obvious. in more ways than one. Of course, if Orleans were still here ... " he let his voice trail off. The French prince had thought Nicci was propositioning him in an earlier conversation when he visited. Perhaps he had been clairvoyant in knowing his cousin's heart. His hands continued up from her thigh to stroke her waist and arms in a loving manner. "It has been a long and exciting night. Now you continue that excitement. I should go to bed straight away," he declared. "Perhaps you can check up on me ... later," he whispered.
Nicolette Vauquelin
It was no-one in particular, other than his admission that he quite enjoyed the random arriavals, a little unplanned diversity into his days. She grinned, this aimless yet pleasant kind of conversation, without secret motivations, simply company to be enjoyed - it was rare in her life and enjoyable... "Incase you need a tonic to help you nod off..." She chuckled warmly, moving up from his lap she caught his fingers and lingered in the touch a moment, "...though I think you should be the one to check in on me." "Goodnight dearest." When Lisa returend she'd need halt such sentiments in the house, but for now it was a pleasant indulgence. OOC: a good point to wrap up the thread Merci! Louis Killington
Diversity was a pleasant thing. Each new stray she brought home presented possibilities. Maldon had seemed a useful sort, but he had gone from court and none knew anything of him. Taking Nicci's fingers he lifted them to his lips for a brief kiss. "Good night cousin. Your skin is hot to the touch. Perhaps you have a fever. Perhaps I can bring a natural remedy to your condition later. Best if you leave your door unlocked." His eyes said the rest as they parted company. OOC~ Merci.
